What is the story behind Binchotan charcoal?
Thanks to a man named Bichuya Chozaemon, Binchotan charcoal became popular in about the 17th century, however it’s history goes much further back than that. Sometimes referred to as ‘white charcoal’, this incredible natural material was thought to have been introduced to Japan by a Japanese monk, and a scholar, about 1,200 years ago.
How do you make it?
In a kiln at a relatively low temperature, we place sustainably sourced wood for a long time. When the wood is nearly done, we will suddenly increase the temperature to around 1800°F until it is red hot. The wood is removed from the kiln and quickly covered with a blend of earth, ash and sand to cool it rapidly. The charcoal then becomes almost white, also why it’s sometimes referred to as ‘white charcoal’. This process of rapidly heating wood, and then rapidly cooling it, incinerates the bark and leaves a smooth, hard surface. Tap it, and you’ll clearly hear a metallic sound.
How does it filter water?
Charcoal is an incredibly porous material, filled with tiny little cavities or holes, which attract contaminants like chlorine. These contaminants are held to the surface of the charcoal, and therefore away from the water you drink. And don’t worry about these holes getting filled quickly, there’s enough surface area in just 0.04 oz of charcoal to cover 5400 square feet! Binchotan charcoal can also release minerals into the water, improving taste and benefiting your health.
How much water can I filter with a charcoal stick?
About 1.1L of water can be filtered with one stick, over 3 months if used every day. If you’d like to filter more water, simply increase the number of sticks in your jug or container.
How long does charcoal last?
Using our ‘Eau Good’ bottles, your charcoal will last about 3 months if you fill it up once a day, every day. You can then simply boil it for 1o minutes which will reactivate the charcoal, and once dried in the sun, or near a window, you can use it for another 3 months.
What do I do with my charcoal when it’s finished as a water filter?
So much! Because charcoal is so porous, it acts as a deodorizer, so can be used in your cat litter, nappy bin, shoes or laundry basket. It will also add nutrients to the soil if you break it up and add to houseplants, and if you pop it in your wardrobe it will absorb the moisture from the air helping your clothes avoid becoming moldy.
Does the charcoal need washing?
You do not need to wash the charcoal, it can be used directly from the packaging.
Can I flavour my water with the charcoal stick in?
Please do not add anything to flavour your water if you’re also using a Binchotan charcoal water filter.
How do I wash the bottle with Binchotan charcoal in?
Please remove it before washing your bottle if using soap.

What happens if I swallow a piece of charcoal?
It is not harmful to swallow the small fragments of charcoal which may break off in your bottle, in fact, active charcoal is often used to treat many health conditions including indigestion and flatulence.
How should I clean my bottle?
All components of the design are dishwasher safe. Unlike most sports bottles, you can separate the spout components for easy cleaning.

Introducing Binchotan charcoal
Why use Binchotan Charcoal?
It may seem counter intuitive to purify your drinking water with a stick of charcoal, but the Japanese have been doing it for centuries. Binchotan is an active carbon made from tree branches and is renowned for its ability to soften water, add good minerals and absorb unwanted tastes and odors, such as chlorine.
How does it work?
Your charcoal is ready to use. Simply fill your bottle/carafe with drinking (potable) tap water and wait for the charcoal to filter impurities from the water. Leaving it overnight is ideal, but you will taste the difference after just one hour. Then, enjoy great tasting water! You can use the charcoal in our EAU CARAFE, or any bottle for that matter. How long does it last?
With time, you will notice a decrease in the filter’s effectiveness on the water taste. You can then recharge it by simply boiling it for ten minutes. The boiling washes out the impurities and frees the charcoal up to absorb some more. Some people have more sensitive taste buds than others so if you notice the decline in taste before 3 months has passed, then it is absolutely fine to boil it at that stage too. Giving it a total life span of six months, as long as it delivers the desired effect, it means it is working!
