This month, Dan Black talks exhibiting at global trade shows, Pantone 15-0343 Color of the Year, Design Ventura and Box Appetit appearing in US TV series Lucifer.
I thought it was time for a quick update on what's been happening at Black+Blum in the past month.
We’ve just finished exhibiting at five trade fairs across the world. We’ve been showcasing designs in London, Frankfurt, Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Los Angeles.
In this ever digital world we live in, trade fairs are the best way for us to have face to face meeting with the stores who we sell to and the ones we want to sell to. It gives us a chance to get real customer feedback on our products and also present our latest designs.
Trade fairs are also an amazing chance to see design trends coming from other companies. This can be new technology, materials or even colours. By chance - or maybe because we are on trend and ahead of the curve - this year's Pantone theme of the year is 'Greenery'.
The specific green colour in demand (Pantone 15-0343) is very close to our own lime green that we use throughout our Box Appetit range.
Back to London and on the office front, we’re really pleased to have Lottie Fry join our team. Lottie is a very talented graphic designer and is helping us with all things 2 dimensional… you’d be amazed how much there is.
Like most people who join our team, it's always hard to imagine how we managed before they were here.
If you haven’t been to the new Design Museum, then I would highly recommend it (it was designed by world-famous British architect John Pawson, who is renowned for his minimal aesthetic).
Design Ventura challenges students (aged 13 –15) to design a new product for the design museum shop. It is a brilliant program which really encourages design students to think entrepreneurially.
The other great benefit of Design Ventura is that it encourages designers from industry to volunteer their time and help steer and advise on the students (I volunteered in previous years).
It might sound shallow, but there is nothing better than spotting our designs when out and about and especially on TV! One of our team spotted our Box Appetit Original lunch box in the US TV series Lucifer (Season 2, Episode 11: "Stewardess Interruptus").
As always, we’re continuing to work on some really exciting new designs that will be launching later this year and I look forward to sharing these with you in future blogs.
Until the next time…
